Ulun Danu Temple
Pura Ulun Danu Bratan or Bratan Pura is a large temple and water temple in Bali, Indonesia – This temple complex is located on the northwestern edge of Lake Bratan in the mountains near Bedugul, Tabanan Regency. Water temples cover the entire area in the flow area, on the downstream edge there are many small water temples specific to each irrigation association (subak). This temple is actually used for offering ceremonies to Dewi Dewi Danu, the goddess of water, lakes and rivers. Lake Bratan is one of the important lakes in terms of irrigation. Lake Bratan is known as a “holy mountain” lake, this area is very fertile, located at an altitude of 1,200 meters, and has a very cold climate. Batur Temple or Ulun Danu Temple was first founded in the 17th century. This temple is dedicated to the god Vishnu and to the lake goddess Dewi Danu. Lake Batur, the largest lake in Bali, is considered the most important on the island of Bali as the main water source for agricultural activities in Bali.
This temple is approximately 70 km from Ngurah Rai International Airport and approximately 50 km from Denpasar city center. In the Bedugul Plateau we can find a temple complex precisely on the northwestern edge of Lake Beratan with Ulun Danu Temple in the center which functions as a subak or irrigation temple. The entire Lake area, precisely on the shores of the lake, is filled with “Water Temples.”
The founder of the temple is thought to be I Gusti Agung Putu. It was founded in Saka 1556 (1634 AD) and is maintained by four “satakan” from villages around this temple area, consisting of: Satakan Candi Kuning covering 5 traditional villages, Satakan Bangah covering 3 traditional villages, Satakan Anapan covering 4 traditional villages. customary, and state that Baturiti covers 6 traditional villages.
